Taking Rocky Point to the Next Level: Hotels, Hotels, Hotels!

Puerto Penasco / Rocky Point, Mexico, has developed in a very unique way.
Usually resort cities in Mexico develop in one of two ways: because they are cities that already have all the necessary infrastructure and due to beautiful locations organically become major resort destinations like Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan or San Miguel de Allende.
Alternatively, some of Mexico's finest resort destinations were master-planned and developed by the Mexican federal tourism development fund, Fonatur. Cabo San Lucas, Ixtapa and Cacun are all examples of Fonatur successes.
Puerto Penasco / Rocky Point does not fit either of these models.
Rocky Point began its development without any kind of infrastructure, and without federal master planning or investment. This place won the hearts of Americans and Canadians -- as far back as the 1960's and 1970's -- with its wonderful natural beauty and its fantastic location at the northern end of the Sea of Cortez.
Following in the footsteps of these earliest pioneers came visionary Mexican, American and Canadian developers who partnered with those pioneers and developed what we have, see, love and enjoy of Rocky Point today.
Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco's development model was -- and remains -- based almost exclusively on private investment. Working within government regulations these developers have built -- in less than 10 years -- an impressive Puerto Penasco which now boasts three great golf courses; a world class resort like Mayan Palace; wonderful beach condo resorts like Las Palomas full of water and amenities; as well as luxurious condo towers like Puerta Privada in Sandy Beach, El Tessoro in Las Conchas, and Luna Blanca in Playa Miramar.
Private investment has enabled Puerto Penasco / Rocky Point to grow up in so many other ways as well.
Puerto Penasco now has a wonderful largely privately funded and operated International Airport with capacity to receive even 747s! Mexico's excellent Pacific Coast regional airline, Aerocalafia, now offers three times a week scheduled service to Mexicali and Hermosillo and effective July 29, 2010 -- by the time you read this -- we will be receiving regular charter flights from the State of Chihuahua.
Aerocalafia is also now offering a spectacular aerial tour of El Pinacate -- one of the worlds most beautiful landscapes. This impressive aerial tour includes overflying craters as big as many on the Moon as well as the stunning views of landscape and developments along over 40 kilometers of coastline on the way back to the airport. Value? This one hour aerial tour only costs $55!
New restaurants and bars have improved the already excellent dinning and nightlife in this resort destination, and now City Government has approved new rules to improve the port area and has invested in the ongoing construction of the Port Tourist area.
Now the question is, what do we need to take Rocky point tourism to the next level and assure the success and expansion of international commercial flights to our community?
Something that already existed when Acapulco or Puerto Vallarta started growing and was an essential component of the Cancun and Los Cabos master plans and government efforts to make them happen -- Hotels.
Rocky Point has been a driving destination where Arizonans enjoy their beach homes, or invested to rent them in a resort pool rental or in a condo hotel. That is what we have now. Is this good? Yes. Is it enough? No.
To take Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco to the next development level it is necessary to increase the availability of hotel rooms. There is a segment of the tourist market who like to rent a home or condo for vacation, but many of the tourists from the USA, Canada and Mexico are looking for a full service hotel experience.
Unfortunately, right now they still have few places to choose from, and only new hotels -- and the expansion and upgrading of existing facilities -- can answer this need.
New hotels will help our community in ways that will extend beyond their property lines. Hotel operators are promoters for destinations where they operate. They enter into agreements with airlines and travel agencies to assure high occupancy and these travelers look for activities and places to shop, eat, drink, enjoy sports or experience adventure.
The Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco of today -- with its international airport in operation; regional and budding charter airline service; magnificent natural beauties like El Pinacate, Sea of Cortez, Estuaries, and places to go -- represents a golden opportunity for hospitality companies, hospitality investment funds, or boutique hotel entrepreneurs.
Having a diverse and strong hospitality industry is the next necessary step that will enable Puerto Penasco to scale to the next level, assuring world class accommodation for tourists who will grow our economy, will enrich our community and support the airlines serving Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco and promoting it as a major resort destination.
And we all know this: a lot of these tourists are going to fall in love with our community and decide to buy a home and stay. Just like you!

Aereo Calafia inaugurates Scenic Flights to El Pinacate
By Heidi Wosak, CEO and Designated Broker, Century 21 Sun & Sand
Published Rocky Point Times July 2010
El Pinacate National Biosphere Reserve is an International Biosphere Reserve and a Mexican National Monument. Located at the mid-point of the Lukeville - Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco highway on the west side of the road, El Pinacate has been described as the "most Lunar place on Earth". NASA used El Pinacate as the testbed for both Moon and Mars-mission vehicles as early as the 1960's.
One of the driest places on the planet, El Pinacate encompasses 17 astounding craters -- asteroid craters, volcano craters, geysers craters -- making this place something fantastic, something simply not of planet Earth.
To see all 17 craters takes 2 days of rugged off-road driving and overnight camping under rugged conditions. It is a wonderful experience, but a very large investment of time and energy, and not necessarily advised for people of any age or physical condition.
Now, due to an aerial tour recently inaugurated by Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco's newest scheduled air carrier, Aereo Calafia, visitors can get a spectacular birds-eye view of El Pinacate every Saturday just by driving to the new Puerto Penasco International Airport!
See The Pinacate from above -- like an astronaut -- ESPECIALLY fun for kids!
The tour lasts roughly a hour. All flights are in comfortable brand new 13 seat Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft -- the king of short-haul small commuter aircraft, worldwide. The aerial tour leaves Puerto Penasco’s Mar de Cortes International Airport every Saturday at 1:30 PM flying over the spectacular Sierra Pinta and over and around the majestic craters of El Pinacate, allowing you to take unique photographs and videos of this Natural Wonder.
The plane returns to the airport flying over the coastal highway and the beautiful beaches of Puerto Penasco, passing all the developments starting at Laguna Shores and Black Mountain; crossing over Choya Bay; past Laguna del Mar; Sandy Beach; The Old Port and El Mirador; Las Conchas; Playa Encanto; Playa Miramar and the Mayan Palace.
And this: only $55. Fantastic!
I strongly encourage you to take the tour. You must make reservations at least 2 days in advance. A minimum of 8 passengers are required. The Aerocalafia reservations number, toll-free in Mexico is 800 560 3949. The call center telephone is from within Mexico dial 01 624 14 343 02 in the City of Los Cabos or 01 (800) 560 3949 in the Rest of the Mexican Republic. Add 011-52 when calling Mexico from the United States.
There is also information about Aereo Calafia, its scheduled routes and other services -- such as charters and whale watching flights -- at their website, aereocalafia.com.mx. The website has an English language side.
So who are Aereo Calafia?
Aero Calafia is a highly-regarded Mexican west coast regional airline founded in Baja in 1992. The airline now serves over 30 commercial airports and over 50,000 customers annually. With an exemplary safety record and a route map that encompasses virtually all of the commercial airports within Baja and from the USA border to Puerta Vallarta along the mainland coast, Aereo Calafia is western Mexico's hidden commuter air travel gem.
Aereo Calafia now flies 3 times a week from Rocky Point to Hermosillo and Mexicali, connecting Puerto Penasco with Sea of Cortez destinations such San Carlos, Loreto, La Paz, Los Cabos, and Guerrero Negro, as well as -- further afield -- Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and all Mexico through connections.
Century 21 Sun & Sand is committed, along with the City of Puerto Penasco and Aero Calafia to promoting the wonderful El Pinacate -- as impressive as the great canyon in our sister state of Arizona. We believe that El Pinacate can become an integral part of the wonderful range of attractions that the Sea of Cortez, the Sonoran Desert and our wonderful progressive town offers visitors, residents and investors.
We hope that you not only take the El Pinacate Aerial Tour, but that you consider how Aereo Calafia might fit in to your travel plans -- or make you think of new travel plans to explore the many destinations along the Sea of Cortez and western mainland Mexico that you can easily access by air from Rocky Point!
